Roger S. Newton

President & CEO

Roger Newton, Ph.D. has worked for thirty years in the pharmaceutical and life sciences industries. He is currently Founder, President & CEO, and a Director of Esperion Therapeutics, Inc., which has its laboratories and offices at the Michigan Life Science and Innovation Center in Plymouth, MI. Prior to his current role, he was Senior Vice President, Pfizer Global R&D, and Director, Esperion Therapeutics, a Pfizer, Inc. company. He was a Co-founder, President & CEO of the original Esperion founded in July 1998. Under Dr. Newton’s leadership and the team's effort, Esperion raised more than $200 million in funding, building a portfolio of biopharmaceuticals focusing on HDL therapy and small molecule lipid regulating agents. Esperion was acquired by Pfizer for $1.3 billion in February 2004 and was run as a separate unit within Pfizer until its closure in May 2007. Dr. Newton divested Esperion IP and the company name from Pfizer in May 2008 and restarted the company as an independent enterprise with $23 million in venture capital. Prior to founding the original Esperion, Dr. Newton was with Warner Lambert/Parke-Davis from 1981-1998. As a Distinguished Research Fellow and Chairman of the Atherosclerosis Drug Discovery Team, he co-discovered and was the product champion of what is now the most prescribed cholesterol-reducing drug in the world, atorvastatin (Lipitor®).

Dr. Newton's research interests for the past thirty-nine years have focused on the nutritional and pharmacological regulation of cholesterol and lipoprotein metabolism as they relate to atherosclerosis and vascular diseases. Dr. Newton is an Adjunct Associate Professor in the Department of Pharmacology at the University of Michigan Medical School. He has co-authored nearly one hundred peer-reviewed articles and chapters during his research career. Dr. Newton has a Ph.D. in nutrition from the University of California, Davis, a Master of Science degree in nutritional biochemistry from the University of Connecticut, and a Bachelor of Science degree in biology from Lafayette College.

Roger is a member of the Board of Directors of Juventas Therapeutics, Rubicon Genomics, and Ann Arbor Spark. He is a member of the National Advisory Boards of the University of Michigan Cardiovascular Center and University of Michigan Life Sciences Institute. He is also a member of the Technology Advisory Boards of Arboretum Ventures and Metagenics, Inc.

Alison Kiley

Director, Alta Partners

Alison joined Alta Partners as an Associate in 2001 and became a Director of Alta Partners VIII in 2006. Her primary investment focus at Alta is on medical technology and biopharmaceuticals. She serves on the board of directors for Aegerion Pharmaceuticals and Prolacta Bioscience. Alison also led Alta's investments in the original Esperion Therapeutics, Insulet Corporation, Kerberos Proximal Solutions and SurgRx.

Prior to Alta, she was a Senior Associate in Robertson Stephens’ Life Sciences Investment Banking Group with primary responsibilities for the execution of corporate finance transactions including IPOs, follow-on equity and convertible preferred offerings. Previously, she was an Associate in Robertson Stephens’ Equity Research Group where she focused on growth medical technology companies. She began her career in the business development group at Geron, a biotechnology company.

Alison earned a Master of Business Administration from Columbia Business School and a Bachelor of Arts in History from Colgate University.

Nicole Vitullo

Director, Domain Associates, LLC

Ms. Vitullo joined Domain in 1999 and became a Partner in 2004. Present board memberships include, Achillion Pharmaceuticals, Celator Pharmaceuticals, Durata Therapeutics, Marinus Pharmaceuticals and VentiRx Pharmaceuticals. Past Board memberships include Calixa Therapeutics, Cerexa, Eunoe and Onyx Pharmaceuticals. In addition to investment responsibilities, she is involved in the distribution/liquidation strategies for the public companies in Domain's Venture Capital portfolios. From 2000 to 2011, Ms. Vitullo was responsible for Domain Public Equity Partners L.P., a fund focused on private investments in public companies. From 1992-1999, Ms. Vitullo was Senior Vice President at Rothschild Asset Management, Inc. where she had responsibility for the U.S. public market investments of International biopharmaceutical Trust plc and biopharmaceutical Investments Limited. From 1991-1992, Ms. Vitullo served as the Director of Corporate Communications and Investor Relations at Cephalon, a publicly traded biopharmaceutical company. Prior to Cephalon, Ms. Vitullo spent 12 years at Eastman Kodak, most recently in Corporate Development where she was involved in the development and management of Kodak’s venture capital activities. Ms. Vitullo received her Masters of Business Administration and Bachelors of Arts degrees from the University of Rochester.

Dov A. Goldstein, M.D.

Partner, Aisling Capital

Dr. Goldstein serves as a Partner of Aisling Capital. Previously, Dr. Goldstein was Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Vicuron Pharmaceuticals until its acquisition by Pfizer in 2005 for $1.9 billion. While at Vicuron Pharmaceuticals, he raised more than $250 million dollars in an IPO, PIPE, follow-on, and block trade transactions. He led the valuation and finance due diligence for the merger with Biosearch Italia (Nuovo mercato: BIO.MI), the first US and Italian public-to-public company merger. He also ran the investor relations and press relations efforts for the company. Prior to Vicuron, Dr. Goldstein was Director of Venture Analysis at HealthCare Ventures. He also completed an internship in the Department of Medicine at Columbia-Presbyterian Hospital. Dr. Goldstein currently serves as a director of ADMA Biologics, Inc., BioRelix, Inc., CardioKine, Inc., Cempra Pharmaceuticals, Inc., Durata Therapeutics, Inc., Scerene Healthcare, Inc., and Topaz Pharmaceuticals, Inc. Dr. Goldstein received his M.D. from Yale School of Medicine. He received his Master of Business Administration from Columbia Business School and he received his Bachelor of Science with honors from Stanford University.

Tim Mayleben

CEO, President, Director, Aastrom Biosciences, Inc.

Mr. Mayleben joined Aastrom as a member of the company's board of directors in June 2005 and became president and chief executive officer in December 2009. Previously he was an advisor to life science and healthcare companies through his advisory and investment firm, ElMa Advisors. He was also president, chief operating officer and a director of NightHawk Radiology Holdings, Inc. Mr. Mayleben also served as chief operating officer of Esperion Therapeutics , where he led the raising of more than $200 million in venture capital and institutional equity funding and later negotiated the acquisition of Esperion by Pfizer in December 2003. Mr. Mayleben is on the advisory board of the Wolverine Venture Fund and serves as a director for several private life science companies. He holds an MBA with distinction from the J.L. Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University and a BA in business administration from the University of Michigan Ross Business School.

Louis Lange, M.D., Ph.D.

Partner, Asset Management Company

Dr. Lange has 22 years experience in academic medicine at Harvard and Washington University, where he served as Chief of Cardiology and Professor of Medicine at Jewish Hospital from 1985-1992 and was one of the first academicians in molecular cardiology.

He founded CV Therapeutics based on this broad field and as Chairman, CEO and Chief Scientific Officer, led the IPO in 1996 and the overall pipeline development and the initiatives for US FDA and European EMEA approval for Ranexa®, a first-in-class late sodium channel blocker and the first anti-anginal drug class approved in 30 years in the US. He also led the approval of Lexiscan®, a first-in-class adenosine A2a receptor agonist for use in myocardial perfusion imaging studies. Dr. Lange oversaw the commercial success of CV Therapeutics and its sale to Gilead in 2009 for $1.4 billion dollars.

As a member of the Board of Trustees at the University of Rochester since 1998 and as Chair of the Health Affairs committee that oversees all of the medical operations for five years, Dr. Lange has been part of the leadership team for strategic re-invigoration of the medical center with construction of two research buildings and recruitment of over 100 faculty members. As a member of BIO Board of Directors (the trade organization of biopharm companies) from 1999 to 2009, Dr. Lange led the largest committee of member companies for two years and was picked as one of two biopharm executives to attend the ceremonies at the White House for the signing of the Bioterrorism bill in 2004. Dr. Lange has been on numerous other public and private Boards in both the non-profit and for-profit arena.
